On Monday, the president of the country and the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced key decisions following the party’s lekgotla over the weekend. During this speech, he announced the reconstruction and recovery plan – a new buzz phrase – that will seek to guide the country as it leapfrogs out of the economic doldrums brought on not only by the Covid-19 pandemic, but also by years of economic indolence, thanks to the ANC.

Since the first democratic elections in April 1994, the ANC has given us at least five economic transformation plans:

• The Reconstruction and Development Programme in 1995;
