POLTROON Often preceded by words like ‘wretched’ and ‘lily-livered’, ‘poltroon’ is the old-timey equivalent of calling someone a big ol’ coward. In fact, it’s thought to have come from the Latin pullus, which literally refers to a young bird – or chicken. Use it in a sentence: “Quit your dilly-dallying and try this extra-hot chilli, you utter poltroon!”
