THE INSIDE STORY
THE QUEEN INVESTITURES ARE CUT BY COVID
Always one to do her duty, the Queen has temporarily had to let events overtake her. Last week it was announced that all forthcoming investiture ceremonies and other “large-scale” gatherings planned at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle this year have been postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions.
There have been no investitures since the end of March, although the Queen did preside over a special, one-off ceremony in July, dubbing NHS fundraising hero Captain Sir Tom Moore in the grounds of Windsor Castle (left).
A statement on the royal family’s official website said: “A variety of possibilities were examined to see if it was possible for investitures to safely take place in line with the guidelines. Sadly, due to the large numbers of guests and recipients attending, it was not possible to find a way of safely delivering these events in the current circumstances.”
The news came as Her Majesty was spotted driving herself around the Sandringham estate at the wheel of a Range Rover (above). She has been enjoying a break with her husband the Duke of Edinburgh at her Norfolk home before getting back to business, including some small engagements and audiences that can still go ahead.
The official statement continued: “The Queen’s intention remains to return to Windsor Castle in October and to resume the use of Buckingham Palace during an autumn programme of audiences and engagements, in line with all relevant guidance and advice.”
