Fitness for Hunters
BEGINNINGS. I was as very fit in my later years of high school, like many young men. The metabolism of an 18-year-old and many forms of competitive sport made being fit easy. But when I went to university, I slowed down; my diet wasn’t good and physical health wasn’t as the top of my list of priorities. This was no issue, until I took up hunting seriously. I’ll never forget the first day my brother and I hiked into some rough country to chase goats. The walk out nearly broke me! It had nothing to do with gear or any other veiled excuse. I simply wasn’t fit enough to do it comfortably. Annoyed with myself, it seemed like the most epic walk imaginable, but at 23, I should have sailed up that mountain.
The 80-percent Rule
To successfully change your lifestyle to a point where you are healthier, fitter, and stronger, you need to do it achievably and sustainably. Going really hard at the gym five days a week, or drastically changing your diet will result in early burnout and disappointment, ensuring reverting to your old ways.
