A battle in the womb

Pressing her ear against my belly, my little girl listened intently.

‘That’s right,’ I smiled at her.

‘There’s a baby in there.’

A few hours before, in December 2018, my husband Adam, now 26, and I had sat our daughter Devon, then two, down to reveal the good news.

‘You’re going to be a big sister,’ Adam explained, and Devon had been over the moon.

‘A little sister for you to play with,’ I added.

‘We don’t know it’s a girl,’ Adam laughed.

‘I’m sure it is,’ I said. ‘I can feel it.’

A few weeks of morning sickness passed by, and at my 20-week scan at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, I was proved right.
