A new dawn for Evesham
THE future of Evesham Abbey in Worcestershire looks bright, after the Evesham Abbey Trust (EAT) confirmed it has received a grant of £788,300 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The grant follows an initial £93,000 that was awarded in 2018 and will be supported by further funding from Historic England, national organisations and local donors. The money will be used to repair and conserve the Grade II-listed walls, as well as funding an archaeological investigation of the site, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Founded in 709 by St Egwin, the Evesham Abbey site was home to ‘one of the most important Benedictine abbeys in England’, according to EAT. The site is the burial place of Simon De Montfort, who died at the Battle of Evesham in 1265, and is the resting place of several English saints. Much of the
