Black women in rural areas and townships have been the hardest hit by the economic effects of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown, according to a socioeconomic impact assessment released by the South African office of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) during Women’s Month.
The assessment found that Covid-19 affected female-headed households the worst and that those households were more likely to fall into poverty than their male-headed counterparts.
