John Byrom was born in 1692 in Kersal, just outside Salford, into a prosperous family of merchants and traders. He was educated at the King’s School, Chester, Merchant Taylor’s, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He then studied medicine in Montpellier, France, before returning to Cambridge. There he began writing poetry, and invented an ingenious system of shorthand, for which he became well known in literary and intellectual circles.
