GULF RACING
The origins of the Gulf Company go back to 1901 when oil was discovered in Beaumont, Texas, with the Gulf Oil Corporation being formed in 1907. The brand name was simply taken from the fact that the city of Beaumont is on the Texan coast which is to the top side of the Gulf of Mexico.
Apparently the gasoline sold in the US around the early 20th century was of an unreliable quality. Gulf decided to indicate that its was the good stuff and branded its far superior product, marking the containers and fuel pumps with the distinctive orange disc which has now become synonymous with the name. Gulf opened the first ever branded petrol station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1913.
