On 3 February 1959, three rising stars of rock’n’roll lost their lives when their plane crashed in an Iowan cornfield. American musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson (the latter also known as ‘the Big Bopper’) were all killed, along with the pilot.
