Your five a day

Just because you have no room for a full-size veg plot, don’t imagine that growing your own crops is out of the question. You might not be self-sufficient, but there is a lot of satisfaction to be gained from just a handful of fresh salads or strawberries from your pocket-hanky patch.

• Beds can be edged with single-tier espaliers (step-over trees). You’ll have enough apples for the odd snack, even an apple pie and pruning is really easy – just shorten all sideshoots to finger length in summer.
