Put in the ground work

While it may seem summer has scarcely started and winter a long way off, January is the month to plant winter greens, such as spinach, silverbeet and some of the brassicas, such as savoy cabbage, Brussels sprouts and broccoli. Peas may still be sown. Dwarf early varieties are best now. Fertilise citrus trees and keep watering to help swell the growing fruit. Mulch around the base with lawn clippings or pea straw.
