The word ‘cult’ usually conjures images of the likes of Charles Manson and his drug-fuelled followers The Manson Family. Fifty-one years ago, during the summer of 1969, they slaughtered seven people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate.
Then there was the tragic Jonestown mass murder-suicide in 1978, where more than 900 people, many children, died after drinking cyanide-laced punch at the order of leader Jim Jones.
