The joy of the empty page
When the first rumblings of lockdown surfaced, I was working with a theatre company in California. We were developing a script I’d written, due to premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Our rehearsal venue overlooked the Pacific Ocean and we were graced with bright skies and a gentle sun. Although the subject matter – school shootings – was harrowing, we danced against the threat with generous, open arms. ‘Joy is an act of resistance’ was our motto.
Reality hit and I flew back to the UK. I didn’t know it, but my premiere and the festival would be cancelled. The phone calls came swiftly as production after production was postponed. Theatre was officially shutting down. to place, reliving life on the road. Every recollection was beautiful and exciting but also non-stop and chaotic.
