MY GRANDMOTHER, a sage woman, advised me never to judge a book by it’s cover. Her advice proved valuable to my inclusive social development, but ironically, her words never lent themselves to the cut and thrust of modern print media. Magazines are judged by their covers. The cover attracts the target audience, lures them toward the surrounding text, and then plunges them into the pages beyond. And for all of that, it is usually the front cover photograph that does the heavy lifting. So, what makes a good cover shot for Sporting Shooter, and how can a hunter take one when in the field?
