With hay fever season in full swing, many of us have been reaching for the antihistamines. But while the tablets are well known, the role and problems caused by histamine are only now gaining medical attention – and for a whole spectrum of health issues.
Histamine is a chemical messenger that is produced in our gut and in our mast cells (a type of immune cell). It plays a vital role in many of the systems that keep us alive and well, but histamine is perhaps best-known for its role in our immune system. When we’re injured or invaded by a pathogen, histamine raises the alarm and triggers the inflammatory response needed to tackle toxins and heal bumps, burns and bruises.
