Slings are a personal choice
RIFLES
Q Can you recommend a decent sling for my stalking rifle?
A Slings are quite a personal choice and which one suits you best will be based on experience and the weight of your rifle. You may prefer a traditional leather sling or a synthetic one. You may want the sling to be narrow or you may prefer it to be wide and padded.
I use a mix of slings, dependent on the weight, size and length of the rifle at hand. For example, a walnut stocked and blued rifle looks nice with a braided leather sling, while a modern-day synthetic stocked stainless steel rifle is better off with a complementing synthetic sling, such as one made from Cordura.
Note that a sling made from leather will require more care to stop it going mouldy and hard, while a sling made from Cordura, nylon or other synthetic materials will be pretty much weatherproof and easy to wipe down if it becomes soiled.
The size of the sling I use is also dependent on the weight of the rifle. For instance, if the rifle I’m carrying is a rimfire — in other words, lightweight — then the sling should be too, so as not to get in the way and weigh it
