IF THE WORD “comfort” were a movie character, it would be Totoro. Conceived for a never-published children’s book by Hayao Miyazaki in 1976, then brought to hand-drawn-animated life 12 years later in the director’s, this secretive forest-dweller looks like the ultimate cuddly toy. A soft-furred blend of bear, owl, rabbit and giant cushion, with expressively wide eyes and a smile that could out-dazzle a Cheshire cat, it is no surprise that he swiftly became the mascot for Miyazaki’s studio, Ghibli, and a Japanese merchandising phenomenon. He is inherently huggable.
