Hold on, Edna!

Crossing the road, hand-in-hand, Mum and I stopped on the pavement.

‘Who is this, then?’ Mum’s friend beamed as she stared down at me.

‘This is Nye,’ my mum Edna, then 43, said proudly. ‘My National Health baby.’

Just four years old, I didn’t say much.
