The COVID-19 pandemic forced many of us out of our usual working environments and into our home offices during the prolonged lockdown period. While this was a seamless transition for those accustomed to working in isolation, for many it proved a shock to the system with all kinds of self-discipline and software-related hurdles to overcome. At the time of writing, lockdown is still very much in effect, but hopefully by the time you read this we will have returned to some degree of normality. However, with social distancing still having to be observed for some time to come, you may wish to continue working from home if the option is available. This is why we have put together this handy survival guide to help you get accustomed to the best software for staying in touch with your work colleagues and sharing your documents, plus some useful advice for multitasking to help you get more done.

USE SPLIT-SCREEN

To dedicate equal screen space to two apps, open them on your Mac desktop, then hover your cursor over the green circle in the top-left corner of one app and choose the ‘Tile Window To Left Of Screen’ option. Click on the other and it will neatly fill the other half.

USE SECOND SCREEN

With macOS Catalina and iOS 13 installed on your Mac and iPad, go to System Preferences on your Mac and click on ‘Sidecar’. Then select your iPad and you will be able to employ it as a second screen for your Mac or a handy graphics tablet.

USE MISSION CONTROL

If your desktop tends to be very cluttered when working, go to System Preferences>Mission Control, set up a Keyboard shortcut for Mission Control and then press it. Now click on the ‘+’ icon in the top-right to create a new desktop and drag apps there.

USE PICTURE IN PICTURE

To watch videos in a separate window while working on your Mac, navigate to the Safari page showing the video, ctrl-click on the speaker icon in the Search/URL bar and then select ‘Enter Picture In Picture’ to open the video in a standalone window.

USE STACKS

If you are using macOS Mojave or higher on your Mac, you can instantly clean up a cluttered desktop by ctrl+clicking on the desktop and choosing the ‘Use Stacks’ option. All
