Perfectly FORMED

In John and Margaret Noakes’ garden in Hertfordshire, a range of rare and wonderful snowdrops covers the ground with flowers as late winter turns into early spring. But the snowdrops are just the overture as a chorus of other early flowers soon joins the show – cyclamen, iris, winter aconites – followed by daffodils and fritillaries, before a selection of summer- and autumn-flowering bulbs. “This garden isn’t just for snowdrops,” John is keen to point out.

Nevertheless, at this time of year, the couple’s collection of snowdrops can’t help but shine, as 60 or so different cultivars come into bloom. “It just happened,” says John, of their passion for these delicate
