“I once read an article that said ‘Who in their right mind would buy a house called Windy Ridge?’ – well, me, as it turns out!” Fiona Chancellor and her husband, George, moved to their house in Little Wenlock, perched on a ridge with views across to the Wrekin in East Shropshire, 38 years ago. “It is cold up here, so plants get going quite late, about three weeks behind nearby Shrewsbury, but what attracted us was the potential of the garden. It’s big for a village garden at two thirds of an acre, and the disinterest of the previous owners meant it was also a blank canvas.”

Fiona and George met at university, completing degrees in environmental studies and agriculture respectively, so both were involved in plants from the start. Fiona went on to work for Notcutts, in their garden centres giving plant advice and also as
