Only 10 or so people can legitimately claim Mark Pascoe to be a genuine, blood-related uncle. Yet in the Outlaw Flat Four pits everyone from Bernie and Carol Newbury to Clyde Berg refers to him as ‘uncle’ Mark, hence I guess that’s a moniker that will no-doubt stick.

Mark has been a long-time VW fan, and has managed to influence the car choice of relatives, starting with three nephews (with two early Bays and a 21-window Samba), his daughter Hannah (with a New Beetle), son Ollie (with a ’70 Cal looker) and I’m sure daughter, Lucy, will be driving a VW once she has passed her test.

Hanging out with the Outlaws was a great way to pick up hints and tips from the racers, especially Pete Shattock and Phil West, both with sub-600kg, 11-second, normally-aspirated motors (at the time). Mark’s initial plan was to build a light, small cubic-inch car, capable of running sub-13
