Should a young Gun go for it?
I’m 16 and have been shooting clays for six years and game for three using my grandfather’s gun, under supervision from him. I am looking to get my own certificate now. Is it worth it? What exactly will this mean I can do?
David says: Having your own certificate gives you much greater flexibility in using a shotgun. If you borrow a gun without having a certificate you must be in the presence of the lender. If you have your own certificate you can shoot without supervision as you are over 15. You may not be given or sold a gun until you are 18 but you may borrow one and it should be on your certificate as well as your grandfather’s. Go for it!

What’s the largest calibre rifle you would use to shoot rabbits?
Ed says: I use a variety of calibres: .22 air rifle; .22 FAC; .17 HMR; and, recently, I’ve added a .204 to the list to enable me to shoot rabbits at longer distances. Yes, it is over the top for rabbits, but as it is part of my job the option to shoot things further away can save time and streamline some tasks. Killing rabbits from 200 to 300 yards is possible if pointed in the correct direction. If working in areas prone to high wind then a larger calibre can be essential. The carcase, however, may only be fit for use as dog food.
