Poles point
Do you often use hides when shooting on the foreshore? I have a lot of birds spooking just before they are in range for a shot. Is it worth the effort to carry netting and poles and if so, which netting would you recommend?
Tom says: I don’t often use netting to conceal myself, but I do use hides to keep geese out of sight. Our marshes have a vast network of gutters that conceal my shooting position enough to ensure ducks and geese flight in range. A lot of this success is also down to fieldcraft and keeping still. Hides can be a great way to increase the chance of bagging a bird. A simple sheet across the gutter, set in a way to make it look natural, can be the perfect solution. I now use a 3D leaf-suit poncho as a net for geese, because the material is lightweight, fast drying and a perfect colour for our area. I will also use these for my hides during the summer months when pursuing corvids.
