Good bloodlines shade colour
I understand cocker spaniels come in a variety of colours, so I was wondering what colour would make the best gundog?
Fran says: There is an old saying “no dog is a bad colour”, and that is true of all breeds. It is true that, especially in cockers, colours go through fashions and trends, but I believe you should never breed for colour. You should breed to improve your lines. Depending on the sire and dam, you could have a number of different colours in a litter of pups. There will be many other factors as to how well they do in the shooting field. Colour will not be one of them.

Advice for beginners
I am new to shooting and would love to get into wildfowling. I’m a bit worried about joining my local club as I don’t have much experience. Do you have advice on how to find a mentor?
Tom says: I believe a mentor is essential for newcomers. Not only will a mentor help you find birds and increase the chance of success by passing on fieldcraft, but they will also help keep you safe and highlight the dangers of foreshore shooting. Most clubs have social functions. I would recommend attending as many as possible. They are a great way to find a mentor. Be keen but not pushy.
