Reading, listening to music or checking their mobiles, commuters on a packed, late-afternoon train in Portland, Oregon, USA, were eager to get home.
It was just like any other journey for most of them on 26 May 2017. But when Jeremy Christian, then 35, got on the train, the relaxed atmosphere catapulted into chaos.
People looked up, suddenly alert. His bellows filled the carriage as he shouted racist abuse at two African-American teenage girls.
‘Go home, you shouldn’t be here!’ he spat furiously at Walia Mohamed and Destinee Mangum.
