A true ’80s icon and household name, XR3 is a byword for classic hot hatchbacks and boy-racer excess. Appearing in September 1980, original XR3 sported carb-fed 95 bhp 1.6 CVH engine, Bilstein dampers, 5.5x14 inch cloverleaf alloys, rubber front and rear spoilers, wheelarch spats, colour-coded bumpers and mirrors, and Laser-striped upholstery. Gained five-speed gearbox in February 1982 but was ousted in October by XR3i, featuring Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection (104 bhp; 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds). There were beefed-up brakes, improved suspension, Monza cloth trim and optional 6x14 inch steel rims. Most XR3is had many options — spotlamps, sunroof, tinted/electric windows and central locking. Mk4 XR3i of February 1986 had same mechanicals but softer suspension, smoother styling and Daytona cloth; Zolda fabric came in 1988, while September 1989’s facelift brought 107 bhp EFi engine, sexier bumpers and better trim.
