FOLLOWING THE MIGHTY MURRAY

Anyone else like me remember reading the adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer? Their adventures rafting the length of the mighty Mississippi River caused many to daydream of emulating them.

Over the years, my continuing love affair with all things motorised on two wheels took over, but I’ve always had a yearning to travel the Murray River from its fledgling springs in the mountains of New South Wales to its escape into the ocean at Goolwa in South Australia.

After patting the bride on the head, “Big Red” and I head off on another adventure to ride the Murray River roads as best we can. A chance phone call with a good friend at a loose end for a few days saw me meet up with Cam, aka Cudge, in Mansfield for a quick run over some of the best motorcycling roads for an overnighter at Khancoban in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. Track closures and rough four-wheel tracks meant we couldn’t make it to the very source of the mighty Murray, so we compromised and decided to ride the twisty and scenic Snowy Mountains Highway. Bugger, the things you have to do!
