A Seamless Love Affair

We read these evocative lines about the saree in Kalpana Shah’s coffee table book, Whole 9 Yards – “A length of fabric that clings to a woman’s body like a long lost lover, embracing her curves, concealing her flaws and extolling her virtues. Seldom has such magic been woven with so little.”

Born out of Indian soil some 5,000 years ago, today the saree is inspiring ever-new silhouettes with even international couturiers like Alex Perry making saree gowns. A whole new generation of designers and young women are embracing this most versatile, ever-young garment, and the pre-stitched versions explode with ever new ideas – from sculptural drama on the blouses to animal prints to dhoti skirts. But even before such innovations, the saree organically offered a host of styling options. HELLO! gets talking
