HOUSED IN NATURE

Living in a turf-roofed house was fairly common in Iceland up until the late 19th century. With timber sparse and slow to regenerate, the island nation turned to turf for roofs and walls, turf being widely available and a good insulator against. Green roofs, it seems, are not just beneficial for beetles, butterflies and birds, but humans too. Would you prefer to behold the vista of houses veiled in greenery or an expanse of metal sheeting?
