HIGHLIGHTS FROM IFA 2019: PAUL GRAY ON 8K

A At IFA 2019 in Berlin we caught up with Paul Gray, who is Research and Analysis Director for TV, Consumer Electronics and Devices with IHS Markit, which puts him in a position to spot the trends well ahead of the curve. We started him talking about 8K TVs, but this led to a fascinating suggestion for how 5G might enable a complete rethink about broadcasting systems for radio, TV and data.

SOUND+IMAGE: So is 8K taking off?

Like 4K at the beginning, it’s push, it’s not pull. The question is always content, and content is scarce. Undoubtedly 8K camera bodies are becoming available, and filmmakers are beginning to shoot in 8K because the camera bodies are available. And definitely an 8K master will look better in 4K than a 4K master.
