COFFEE CAPSULES dream solution OR ENVIRONMENTAL NIGHTMARE?

According to Nespresso, although still fast-growing, the portioned coffee segment, as it is known, only represents two per cent of overall consumed cups, however, this still equates to over 65 million single-serving coffee portions in South Africa in 2018 alone. Globally this number has been estimated to be 56 billion, with almost all of these capsules ending in landfills.

Traditional single-serving capsules are either made from aluminium or plastic. Alternatives made from biodegradable materials and reusable options have also made their appearance.
