SEA SNAKE SNORKELLING SENIORS
A group of brave senior-citizen snorkelers are assisting scientists understand sea snakes in New Caledonia. The Fantastic Grandmothers are all aged in their sixties and seventies and have been tracking a particular type of sea snake in the popular swimming area of Baie des citrons, located off the capital city of Noumea. Scientifically known as the Hydrophis major, the venomous greater sea snake measures around one-and-a-half-metres long and was only spotted 10 times over 36 months before the Fantastic Grandmothers became involved. On their snorkelling adventures, the senior-serpent trackers photograph the animals, including potentially lethal ones, within the bay. So far, the pictures have led to 140 greater sea snakes being identified within a 25 month timeframe.
