Background: The Handmaid’s Tale engaged audiences globally in 2017, winning five Emmys and quickly becoming one of the most talked about drama series of the year. The full season premiered on SBS’s distinctive streaming service, SBS On Demand, in July 2017. A strong fit with SBS’s charter, exploring challenging and confronting themes, including women’s rights, political power and government suppression of diversity and freedom, the series also provided an opportunity to encourage more Australians to engage with SBS’s diverse Australian programming.

With limited marketing spend, SBS launched the series
