It’s rapidly becoming the catch-phrase of our time, along with ‘Alexa’, ‘Hey Siri’, and the trigger words for the very few other voice assistants which have entered the market early enough to amass a suitably extensive hoard of voice samples on which to base their sometimeswondrous ability to understand what we say.
It was not alway like this. Our reviewing team at Best Buys Audio & has been trying out voice-recognition technology for decades (Dr. James Baker laid out the description of a speech understanding system, Dragon, back in 1975). Has it ever worked well? No it hasn’t. Tech journalists have long enjoyed product launches involving speech recognition, because they always go entertainingly wrong at just the right moment.
