You know that a particular loudspeaker design has achieved iconic status when audiophiles who are discussing it don’t mention the name of the manufacturer, just the model name (or number) of the speaker itself. Richter’s ‘Wizard’ speakers are certainly one such design, almost always referred to simply as ‘the Wizards’.
One reason for that status is because Richter’s ‘Wizard’ design has been on the market for close to 40 years in one incarnation or another. Another reason might well be the number of awards the design has garnered over that time. Yet another might be that, according to its manufacturer at least, more ‘Wizards’ have been sold in Australia than any other loudspeaker designed in this country. But the main reason is that throughout their long ‘career’, as the awards attest, the Wizards have consistently delivered remarkable ‘bang for your buck’ (they are not quite longstanding enough to have once delivered pre-decimalisation ‘sound per pound’). Now we have this latest Series 6Plus version of the Wizard, loaded with changes (though not enough, apparently to engender a new Series 7), and yet only $200 more than the previous S6 model, which in a world of rising everything at present, is to be applauded from the off. But do they maintain their magical status?
