The paws-without-claws group includes predators that are catlike and have the ability to retract their claws. The claw is attached to the final toe bone and attached to a ligament. When the animal is either frightened or excited, the muscles will pull the tendons back and expose the claw.

Retractable means the claws will be sheathed or hidden away whilst the animal is in a relaxed state. The ability to retract protects the claws against wear and tear.

The animals use their claws especially for

• hunting,

• fighting,

• gaining traction on a surface, and

• climbing trees.

Scratching their claws on trees or other substrates is typical of most cats. There is more than one reason for this behaviour. It keeps the claws honed and sharp but also enables built-up debris and dirt to be removed. While they are
