In this issue we will discuss the next group: paws without claws.
The paws-without-claws group includes predators that are catlike and have the ability to retract their claws. The claw is attached to the final toe bone and attached to a ligament. When the animal is either frightened or excited, the muscles will pull the tendons back and expose the claw.
Retractable means the claws will be sheathed or hidden away whilst the animal is in a relaxed state. The ability to retract protects the claws against wear and tear.
The animals use their claws especially for
• hunting,
• fighting,
• gaining traction on a surface, and
• climbing trees.
