A Singular Safari
IF EVER THERE was a safari to make any hunter envious it was he Smithsonian-Roosevelt expedition to east and central Africa in 1909. The purpose was to collect specimens of Afri wildlife for the American museums in Washington and New ork. Planned by the ex-President of the USA, Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, and sponsored principally by the Smithson nstitute and Andrew Carnegie, it was the biggest and most expensive hunting trip Africa had ever known.
Theodore Roosevelt was an adventurous, courageous and very knowledgeable man, famous for his bravery as a colonel in the Spanish-American War of 1898 in Cuba, when he’d led a cavalry charge up a hill defended by Spaniards armed with 7mm Mausers.
