Go! Drive & Camp

A year’s worth of campsite choices

Here we are in March already, even though it feels as if we’ve only just wished one another a happy new year. The reality, though, is that the Easter weekend is just around the corner, and then the winter break starts… with the short holiday between the children’s third and fourth quarters following shortly thereafter. And then, believe it or not, the summer holiday will be upon us again. We should all strive to make the most of the time we have, and for each of these holidays, we’ve picked out five fantastic spots where you and your loved ones can pitch camp to relax and enjoy.

Easter weekend

ALMEGA CARAVAN PARK, HAMMANSKRAAL

Directly across the road from the Dinokeng Reserve, is the caravan park that André Geyser developed on 200 ha of fenced land partly bordering the reserve.

Each of the ablution blocks is a square building with four bathrooms. You camp next to your own private facility on a lovely lawn. Each bathroom has a spacious shower, toilet and basin as well as a surface where Mom can unpack her makeup next to two regular 220 V domestic sockets.

Outside your bathroom is a double sink for the dishes as well as a blue caravan socket. You also get your own braai area, and there are lots of shade trees around.

Kids have plenty to do: there’s a jungle gym, swings and a sand pit. The campsite is on a fenced plot of 2 ha, and boasts a unique pool – in the form of a guitar.

The body of the guitar is the deep side and the neck connects to the head, that’s shallow for the little ones. The pool is 75 m from the nearest stands.

DUBE PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE, BRITS

Dube is one of the most popular campsites near Brits, and the owner, Gert Scheepers, has increased the number of stands from 120 to 200.

The new stands, just like the old ones, all have power and water. He is also replacing the regular power sockets with blue caravan ones. There are warm and cold swimming pools, a 6 km hiking trail, a trampoline and a dam where you can pull out carp, kurper and catfish (catch and release). Here you are in the Bushveld and the trees don’t grow that high. Bring a reflective sheet if you come camping in the summer.
