‘Firstly, it’s important to note that any relationship is a two-way street and both individuals contribute to whatever problems arise in it. Therefore most issues are due to ineffective communication,’ explains Kobus du Plooy, clinical psychologist and associate professor at North-West University.
He advises that if you find yourself in such a situation, start by doing some self-reflection on what role you may have played towards creating the tension in the relationship, rather than simply putting the blame on the other person. Before making drastic decisions – and depending on how important the person is in your life – confront them, as they also have their side of the story. And listen carefully and honestly to that story, as it may well offer insights into your own behaviour that you weren’t aware of. ‘The aim should be to resolve tension by understanding where they’re coming from.
