In 1995, a new menswear brand burst into the fashion world. Created by twin brothers, Dean and Dan Caten, Dsquared2 had been years in the making. “We found a little factory and we paid for everything, made the samples, and we sewed them,” Dan tells us from Milan, where the brand is based. Their first collection was well-received, and it wouldn’t be too long until they caught the eyes of the A-list.
At the turn of the millennium, Madonna was looking for her next reinvention and the Caten brothers’ creations caught her attention. “But she didn’t know us and doesn’t like not knowing, so she called up and was like, ‘I want to know everything about you!’” Dan laughs. The next thing they knew, they were designing customary looks for what would become her Don’t Tell Me music video and masterminding her now-iconic Western denim look. And when Madonna knows she’s onto a good thing, she sticks with it. Within a year they had designed more than 150 pieces for her Drowned World Tour.
