Pikes Peak lost to bikes?
The fatal accident to four-time winner Carlin Dunne at the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has had major repercussions, with the announcement by organisers that motorcycles will not be part of the event for 2020. Dunne died when he high-sided his Ducati Panigale ‘Street Fighter’ prototype at the final corner of the 20-kilometer ‘Race to the Clouds’, sending him off the side of the mountain. Despite a plea from Carlin Dunne’s mother that bikes should remain on the program, a statement issued by the PPIHC Board of Directors on July 26 said that “analysis for long-term viability (for motorcycles to compete)” would be conducted, “so that organizers can gather data and analysis to review more thoroughly the impact on the overall event in the absence of this (motorcycle) program. It also stated that while motorcycles had raced at the event since the first meeting in 1916, bikes had not been a continuous part, running in 41 of the 97 years of competition. It went on to say, “PPIHC staff and board will continue to track all metrics related to the annual race and make a final determination in late 2020 about whether or not the inclusion of a motorcycle program will take place in future years.”
