THE MUSIC ISSUE

Who can deny the amazing power of South African music? If it’s not making us dance, then it’s ever-evolving or the lyrics give us something to be nostalgic about. From hip hop rising from the ashes to become one of the most listened-to genres, gospel turning over a new leaf, to our soothers sounding helluva better than Maxwell on a good day; our neo jazz artists awakening the genre from what has too long been perceived as a ‘deep slumber’, and the new kids on the block leaving our jaws on the floor with admiration and how grateful we are to those who introduce us to good music. Don’t even get us started on our dance music! To New Age Gqom, house and Amapiano (kwaito reborn), thank you for helping us sweat off our troubles and giving us more reason to fill up dance floors! Meet some of the artists who, in our books, rocked the socks out of 2019! To the many other musos who didn’t make the issue, those who cancelled or missed their flights [chuckles], we salute you!
