THE ART OF TRACKING
One of the skills a hunter will acquire, or at least should acquire, is the ability to track an animal. Even if being led by a guide, it is still a good idea to have the knowledge to track the animal yourself. It adds to the thrill or experience of the hunt.
Tracking is one of the hardest skills to master. Nothing is clear cut, there are so many variables involved in just about every aspect of this science. It’s certainly been one of my hardest skills to learn, and every time I go out into the bush (I teach bushcraft), I return home having learnt something new. Even seasoned trackers will always learn something.
Just about every animal (there are a few exceptions to this rule) will leave a tell-tail track. It is a snapshot in time of precisely what the animal was doing along the way. But how you interpret that picture will depend on your skill at being able to read the subtlest of signs.
