“I see myself as a mother and wife first, then a human-rights and animal-rights activist,” says actress Thandie Newton, 43. “Over the past few years, I’ve let my life as an actress take fourth place at least.”
However, her latest controversial role – as Maeve in Westworld – has catapulted her back into the limelight, in an onscreen career that has spanned over two decades. Her role is as a bar madam in an Old West theme park staffed by robots, called hosts. As the series has progressed, her character is revealed to be a host programmed to act out scenes for the theme park guests, who pay to indulge in their most depraved fantasies and vices.
Her character, Maeve, has grown to be an empowering character. Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, Newton said: “Of course I am an empowered woman. I wanted to do Westworld for my kids, particularly for my girls.”
