World heritage and the future

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention is a perfect example of the thoughtful injunction ‘think globally, act locally’. It is the world’s most popular environmental convention, with 193 countries having joined and Australia one of the first to do so (in 1974). The nature of the convention is that, while its establishment and operation is international, the on-ground protection and management is a matter for each state.
