AGRIBUSINESS: THE NATURE OF A FARM
KPMG’s Agribusiness Agenda 2019, which was released at Fieldays, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event, was its 10th anniversary issue. The 100 page report looks extensively at the past, present and future of agribusiness in New Zealand reflecting the opinions of hundreds of agri-food sector leaders.
Here we highlight the chapter looking into the nature of a farm and how the world’s growing hunger and consumer expectations are likely to change how the world farms.
KPMG says the sustainability of intensive farming systems is increasingly being challenged by consumers and regulators from a variety of perspectives – environmental impact and water quality, through the welfare of animals and people to the quality and nutritional density of the food being produced.
“To meet the demand for food, the search is on for new farming models, focused on meeting the nutritional needs of the population while better utilising natural resources and embedding food production closer to the ultimate consumers,” the report says.
