hanks to Tom Pinnock for a brilliant cover story on Pink Floyd [June issue]. I’ve long held the opinion that the period between Syd’s departure and the heavyweight run beginning with The Dark Side Of The Moon gave rise to the band’s best, most involving music. Their film soundtracks, particularly, are terrific – and with hindsight seem a particularly useful opportunity for the band to find their way forward without their old singer. Apart from anything, it feels a comparatively fresh period to cover. The Syd years are so slim, there can’t be anything left to say about them; while the The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall era has been exhaustively documented.
