Dounreay in ‘N’

ONCE a darling of Inverness TMD from 1982, No. 37262 experienced a mixed existence after being transferred away from Inverness in 1990.

It joined a stable of Class 37/0s for passenger workings on the Kyle and Far North lines alongside the Aberdeen and Highland lines. It was painted in BR Large Logo livery in the early 1980s, equipped with headlights and RETB in 1982.

No. 37262 was named Dounreay at Thurso in June 1985; nameplates it retained after it was moved to other Scottish depots in 1990 and subsequent transfers between depots in Scotland, the north and Midlands, including a very fleeting return to Inverness.

It was allocated to Bescot briefly in 1995 and again in 1996/7 before a short stint on the former Southern Region at Stewarts Lane and Eastleigh. It returned to Bescot briefly in 1999 before being sent to Wigan Springs Branch and the dreaded EWS component recovery site. It
